The Order of the Knights Templar was not only made up of the brothers of the Order. The Sergeants who originated from the lower classes of the society of that period also played an important roll and were employed to perform various tasks throughout the circle of the Order. The Templar Sergeant wore uniforms composing of black tunics and cloaks with the red cross of the Order emblazoned on the tunic. The red cross was conceded to the Templars by Pope Eugenio III (prevailing from 1145 to 1153) and was a symbol of martyrdom.
