Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, The Marne 1914

The Royal Engineers are a famous regiment of the British Army tasked with all the engineering needs of an army and exist to this day.

In 1914 the RE were busy from the very start of World War One in building defences and slowing the enemy, including the blowing-up of bridges.

This figure shows an officer of the RE, clearly involved in demolition with his satchell of explosives directing his troops to help in the defence of the river Marne in 1914.

In 1914 the British and French armies turned and faced the advancing Germans winning this most important battle and ending German hopes of q quick victory.
